Two Qatari sisters were tear-gassed in their chauffeur-driven Bentley on a Paris motorway and robbed of €5m, in the latest major heist to shock the French capital.
The thieves struck weeks after US reality television star Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in a Paris hotel.
The two Qatari tourists, both in their sixties, had just left Le Bourget airport when they were flagged down by the robbers on the A1 motorway near a service station.
After spraying both women and their driver with tear gas, the masked men forced open the car's boot and fled with an estimated €5m worth of valuables including jewellery and clothes.
Thieves frequently target cars leaving Paris's Charles de Gaulle and Le Bourget airports via the motorways. They often take advantage of traffic jams by the Landy tunnel to pounce.
"[They took] everything in the vehicle - jewels, clothes, luggage," a police source said of the robbery yesterday, and another described it as a "spectacular" heist.
An investigation into the robbery, which took place at around 9pm on Monday, was opened yesterday after the driver contacted French police.
The female tourists, who have not been identified, are yet to come forward.
The robbery is the latest in a spate of high-profile heists in Paris. In October, Kim Kardashian (below), the wife of US rapper Kanye West, was gagged and tied up by masked robbers who had gained access to her exclusive hotel suite by posing as police officers. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
