Russia halts US adoptions
Russia has suspended adoption of children by Americans after a US nurse returned a seven-year-old boy to Moscow on his own saying she could no longer care for him.
The Kremlin said the incident last week was "the final straw" and yesterday the Russian foreign ministry confirmed it was halting all US adoptions until a special treaty could be signed with the US government.
The US government says it is willing to negotiate such a treaty, a move it has resisted in the past, but it is unclear how long that process will take and in the meantime hundreds of US adoption applications will be frozen.
A US state department delegation is due in Moscow next week to start talks on the issue. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
