Rooney loses press complaint

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has failed in an attempt to force an apology from the 'Sunday Times' over claims he is paying only 2pc tax on some of his earnings, writes Ian Herbert.

Rooney complained to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) over the story published in January, particularly the headline 'Top footballers dodge millions in income tax: Rooney pays 2pc on some earnings.'

The story claimed Rooney had saved nearly £600,000 (€688,000) by taking £1.6m (€1.8m) in loans rather than as income over a two-year period.

The PCC dismissed his complaint, saying there was no great disparity between the text and the headline.
