Putin sacks defence chief to pave way for corruption investigation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sacked his defence minister after his ministry became embroiled in a corruption scandal.

Anatoly Serdyukov has been replaced by Sergei Shoigua, a loyal ally of Mr Putin.

Mr Putin said he had removed Mr Serdyukov to create "conditions for an objective investigation" into claims that a state-controlled military contractor had sold assets to commercial firms at a loss of nearly three billion roubles (€78m).
