Police are said to be investigating attempts to extort the high profile player, who is contracted with one of the Premier League's top ten clubs.

Reports on Wednesday claimed the player, who is in his 20s, had group sex with three Swedish women during a recent holiday at the American gambling city.

It was claimed that two of his male friends also had sex with the women at the same time.

The whole incident was filmed on a BlackBerry mobile phone while photographs are believed to have also been taken.

The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was then contacted over email by a mystery person who threatened to circulate the footage and images.

It remains unclear how much money was asked for. It is also not known which police force was investigating the claims.

The Sun reported that the player met the women, who included a 25 year-old waitress, at a well known Las Vegas nightclub where they spent several hours drinking.

It was then claimed the group had sex in the player’s hotel room, where he had sex with the waitress and his friends had intercourse with the other two women.

The newspaper said one of the pictures included the player wearing only a condom.

"We are trying to trace the person behind the email address, though he or she has tried to hide their identity,” a source told The Sun.

We're keeping an open mind on whether the person making the demands was one of the girls or a third party unconnected with what went on in the hotel."

A spokesman for the club he played for was unavailable for comment. The player has also not commented on the allegations.
