Brazilian national Sebastian Bellin formerly played for the Belgian national basketball team and Oakland University in the US.

A photo has emerged of a man understood to be Bellin, lying wounded in a puddle of his own blood after the attack at Zaventem airport.

Two separate blasts occurred in the departures hall shortly before 8am local time yesterday morning.

Oakland University head men's basketball coach has asked for people to pray for Bellin as he prepared for a second surgery on his legs.

"My ex player Seb Bellin was injured in the Brussels bombing. Going for second surgery. Please pray for Seb," he wrote on Twitter.

According to CBS Sports,Bellin was at the airport to fly home to his wife and children and to speak to an Oakland senior about possible career options with a European pro team.

Bellin was transported to a nearby hospital where he was operated on. It is understood there is a large amount of shrapnel in his legs.

"What we've found out was that he had a lot of shrapnel in his legs," Kampe told CBS.

"I have not been able to verify that everything [with the surgery] was successful. I've only been able to verify that he was going to survive. "He's got more shrapnel in his hip and will need a second surgery."
