Paper's phone hack victims get public apology

DUCHESS of York Sarah Ferguson, actor Hugh Grant and Charlotte Church's priest were among 17 phone hacking victims offered public apologies in London's High Court yesterday by News International.

The contrition and undisclosed damages for 144 cases means 26 victims of the 'News of the World' illegal hacking activities have yet to settle.

Among those who opted for a courtroom apology were singer James Blunt, Uri Geller and Colin Stagg, the man wrongly accused of the murder of Rachel Nickell.

Those who settled but opted to keep the terms private included Cherie Blair, Chris Tarrant, David Beckham's father, Ted, actor James Nesbitt and Wayne Rooney.

Yet to settle are Princess Diana's former butler Paul Burrell and former boxer Chris Eubank.

Hugh Grant, who said he would be donating part of his settlement to the Hacked Off pressure group, later Tweeted that he wanted his case to go to a full trial, but had been prevented from doing so by libel law restrictions.

All of the victims who settled had their mobile phone voicemails illegally intercepted by journalists or others employed by the 'News of the World'. (© Independent News Service)
