Oops! Rick Perry proves two out of three ain't good
Texas governor Rick Perry appears to have put an end to his hopes to win the Republican presidential nomination, after giving a dismal performance at a debate between the candidates last night.
The humiliating performance has led to even his own supporters accepting that his campaign is now over.
Perry was outlining what has become one of the main focuses of his campaign, his plans to reduce government funding by abolishing three state departments, when he appeared to have a brain freeze.
"It's three agencies of government when I get there that are gone: Commerce, Education and -- the, uh -- what's the third one there? Let's see ..." Perry said.
"Commerce, Education, and -- uh. The, uh ..."
Fellow candidate Mitt Romney tried to help him out, suggesting "EPA?"
"EPA! There you go," Perry said and laughed.
However, the debate moderator John Harwood pressed Perry, asking him if it really was the EPA he was thinking of.
"No, sir. No, sir," Perry replied. "I would do away with Education. The, uh, Commerce. And let's see. I can't. The third one, I can't," he said, adding "Oops."
In a press conference after the debate, Perry acknowledged he had messed up. "I'm sure glad I had my boots on because I sure stepped in it out there," he said.
