Nine die after boat crash in Moscow

NINE people died early yesterday when an overcrowded party boat crashed into a docked barge on the Moscow river and sank.

The Lastochka, which had been hired for a birthday celebration, crashed into the barge at around 1am yesterday in south-west Moscow. Seven passengers survived. Russian officials suggested that Gennady Zinger, the owner and captain of the boat, may have been to blame for the crash. They said Mr Zinger had been fined three times in the past for violating safety regulations, including carrying too many passengers.

Turkey struggles to control army

Turkey's military and political leaders face a battle to restore order in NATO's second-biggest army today at a military council overshadowed by the resignation of its top four generals in protest at the jailing of officers.

The long-running strains between the secularist military and Islamist-rooted government boiled over on Friday when chief of general staff Isik Kosaner stepped down, along with the army, navy and air force commanders.

Journalists strike over redundancy

BBC journalists are staging another 24-hour strike since midnight in protest at compulsory redundancies, threatening disruption to radio and TV programmes.

Members of the National Union of Journalists are walking out across the country, after efforts last week to break the deadlocked failed.

Police kill four in Chinese clashes

Police shot dead four people yesterday in China's far northwest, bringing to 11 the death toll in weekend violence in one of the country's most troubled ethnic regions.

The suspects died after more than 10 pedestrians and officers were injured in what the state-run Xinhua News Agency called "an eruption of violence" in Kashgar. It followed a day of clashes in the same Silk Road city that killed seven people and injured 22.

Mirren tops list of best bodies at 66

Film star Helen Mirren has been named Best Celebrity Body at the age of 66 in a new poll that suggests older celebrities are rivalling their more youthful counterparts in the public's eyes.

The actress, best known for 1990s television crime drama 'Prime Suspect' and films including 2006's 'The Queen', pipped supermodel Elle MacPherson (48) to the top in the poll by gym chain LA Fitness. Model and television presenter Kelly Brook came third.
