'Negligent' elderly pair lose toddler

An Italian toddler conceived through IVF is to be put up for adoption because her elderly parents are negligent and "narcissistic", a court has ruled.

An appeal court in Turin ruled this week that Luigi de Ambrosis (71), a retired former mayor, and his wife Gabriella (59), a librarian, were incapable of looking after the girl.

The girl, identified in court only as Viola, is two-and-a-half but has been in care since she was a baby.

The court said that there had been instances of neglect and that the couple had not shown sufficient love towards their daughter.

Mr De Ambrosis said he and his wife would appeal to the supreme court: "They've taken our little girl away just because of our age and now they are even forbidding us to see her." (© Daily Telegraph, London)
