Police have launched a murder investigation following 74-year-old David Brickwood's death in the Abington area of Northampton.

Officers were called to a house in Lindsay Avenue just after 2am on Saturday, Northamptonshire Police said.

The force said Mr Brickwood had been "violently assaulted".

Officers performed emergency first aid in an attempt to save his life, but he later at Northampton General Hospital.

A major incident room has been set up to investigate the death.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Graham, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a dreadful assault on an elderly man in his own home in the early hours of the morning.

"Fortunately, incidents of this nature are incredibly rare, and I would appeal to the public to contact us if they know anything about Mr Brickwood's death or what may have happened in the hours leading up to this incident."

Anyone who was in the Lindsay Avenue area in the early hours of Saturday morning who saw or heard anything unusual is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101.
