The 31-year-old man was stopped by a police patrol but as an officer got out and approached him, the BMW 650i convertible made off.

Police said it was not pursued and was not seen again until after it had crashed several minutes later in Paradise Drive, Eastbourne, East Sussex, just after 8pm on Monday.

Emergency teams tried to revive the driver, who was the sole occupant of the BMW, but he was pronounced dead at the scene following the single-vehicle crash, Sussex Police said.

The police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), was told about the earlier contact by the force, and it is now considering the circumstances.

Police asked anyone who saw the crash or noticed the BMW being driven shortly before it happened to call 101, quoting Operation Amos.
