MONACO is embracing the wedding of Prince Albert II to Charlene Wittstock, the South African former Olympic swimmer, with high hopes that the event will revive the principality's stuttering economy and restore its glamorous reputation, writes Henry Samuel in Paris.
Prince Albert's engagement finally gave Monaco's people hope that the Grimaldi dynasty, which has ruled almost uninterrupted since 1297, would continue.
More than 200,000 tourists have descended on the Riviera principality for Friday's wedding.
The tax haven is still struggling to recover from the 2008 financial crisis, which resulted in a 9pc drop in tourism and dented casino takings by 14pc.
But no expense has been spared for the nuptials -- the price tag is an estimated €50m -- in an attempt to match the majesty of Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
