A man armed with an axe was tasered after a stand-off with police.

Officers were called to a roundabout on Welbeck Road, Newcastle, after reports of a man in distress at 6.50pm.

There they found him with the axe at his feet and he was indicating he had a concealed weapon. As a result they closed the road and a cordon was put in place.

Following an hour and forty-five minute stand off, the 29-year-old approached the Northumbria Police officers "in an aggressive manner" and was tasered.

The force said he was arrested for "outstanding matters" and taken into custody.

The road has now fully re-opened and the cordon has been taken down.
