A gunman has entered a law firm in Stuttgart, Germany sparking a major police operation - local media is reporting.

Website bild.de is reporting that the armed man broke into a building in the east of the city and a possible hostage situation is unfolding.

It is believed that a woman, living in the area, spotted the man entering the building and she contacted security forces.

Police have secured the area around the building and suspended train services in the proximity of the alleged incident site, between Ruhbank (TV tower) and Olgaeck train stations.

Locals reported hearing shots but police have not confirmed this.

Pictures from the scene show that police are currently preparing to storm the building.
