I’ve been hacked: Furious Paul McCartney to contact police

By Mark Hughes

Friday August 05 2011

Sir Paul McCartney has said that he plans to contact police over allegations that his voicemail messages were intercepted.

His former wife, Heather Mills, had claimed that a senior Mirror Group journalist admitted hacking voicemails left for her by the musician.

He told the Television Critics Association in America that he would contact police once his summer tour was over.

“I will be talking to them about that,” he said. “I don’t think it’s great. I do think it is a horrendous violation of privacy, and I do think it’s been going on a long time, and I do think more people than we know knew about it.”

The chairman of the Commons committee that investigated phone hacking has called for Piers Morgan to return to Britain and answer questions about the alleged illegal interception of voicemails while he was editor at the Daily Mirror.

John Whittingdale has also said Scotland Yard should investigate whether phone hacking was prevalent at other national newspapers.

He said: “There are big questions to answer and I think the police will probably want to address some of those questions.

“Clearly if there is evidence implicating other newspapers then that has to be part of the investigation.”

Mr Morgan has faced questions after the publication of comments made in previous interviews and articles which appeared to suggest he was aware of a culture of phone hacking.

Mr Morgan said: “I have never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone nor published any story obtained from hacking.”.

Mr Whittingdale backed calls made by Harriet Harman, the deputy Labour leader and Therese Coffey, a Tory MP.
