Italian senator likens minister to orangutan
The vice-president of the Italian senate is facing calls to resign after he compared Italy's first black minister to an orangutan.
Speaking at a party rally of the anti-immigration Northern League, Roberto Calderoli said when he saw photographs of Cecile Kyenge (48, pictured), Italy's Congo-born minister for integration, he said: "I cannot but think of the features of an orangutan, even if I am not saying she is one."
His comments were deemed "unacceptable" by Enrico Letta, the Italian prime minister. Guglielmo Epifani, the head of the Democratic Party, demanded his resignation. Mr Calderoli said yesterday he had merely made a "friendly joke". (© Daily Telegraph, London)
