A paramedic has gone on trial accused of stealing a Rolex watch from the wrist of the Sopranos star James Gandolfini as he lay dying in Rome after a massive heart attack.
The stretcher-bearer was part of a team that rushed to the Boscolo Exedra Hotel in the Italian capital in June 2013 when the American actor collapsed in his suite from a cardiac arrest.
Claudio Bevilacqua, 43, is accused of taking the £2,000 Submariner watch as 51-year-old Mr Gandolfini was fighting for his life.
He did not appear in court in Rome for the start of the trial on Monday and so did not enter a plea. The trial was adjourned until November – a time-lag which is normal under Italy’s notoriously slow judicial system.
