President Vladimir Putin played up his ironman image yesterday as he released photos of him exercising in the gym with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev before tucking into a breakfast of steak.

In one photo, Mr Putin grips the handlebars of a dual pulley, while another shows Mr Medvedev on an exercise bike. While the Kremlin doesn't indicate when the meeting took place, the show of solidarity comes as Russia entered its first recession in six years.

The government said last week that gross domestic product would fall 3.3pc in this year, even as economists predict an even deeper contraction amid the renewed plunge in oil prices and sanctions over Ukraine.

The shrinking Russian economy and the rout in emerging market currencies has heaped pressure on Mr Medvedev's government.

Mr Putin (62) and Mr Medvedev also watched a tournament of sambo, a Russian martial art, in Sochi, according to a Kremlin statement.

The Russian team won the top prize in the competition, beating athletes from countries including the US, the UK and Canada.
