The data watchdog has moved to stop the potential for phone hacking in the wake of the British scandal which led to the closure of the News of the World.
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has contacted mobile phone companies to investigate if they can remove remote access to voicemail.
Deputy Commissioner Gary Davis said that his office had already been in contact with mobile operators.
The News of the World has been accused of accessing private messages by using a default pin number to dial into mobile phone messages and in some cases deleting them.
