The break-in happened at about 4am on Sunday morning at a villa in the resort of Vilamoura, in the Algarve.

The Portugal News reported that the property belongs to a British couple in their 50s, who were there with their son, in his 20s, and who are understood to have lived in the country for a number of years.

According to a source from the Portuguese judiciary police, the wife found the intruder on the first floor after hearing noises.

Her husband rushed to help her after she screamed, and a scuffle broke out between the householder and the burglar.

The man was then joined by his son, and they managed to restrain the burglar before calling police.

One report said the raider collapsed and died as officers went to handcuff him. He was said to have been held in a sort of "neck lock" by the couple's son as they lay on the floor with the father sitting on top of the burglar.

The intruder, a Portuguese man in his mid-20s, is said to have been in prison in the past.

The family are not currently said to be subject to any action or restrictions, except to let the authorities know if they leave the country or move house.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are in contact with police in Portugal regarding this incident and our embassy staff are ready to provide assistance if required."
