STUART HALL, the broadcaster, has protested his innocence after being charged with sexually assaulting young girls in the 1970s and 1980s.
The 82-year-old former 'It's A Knockout' presenter accused the police of leaking information to the media and creating a false impression about the details of his case. Hall, a father of two, spent the day at his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire. His solicitor released a statement insisting there was no truth in the allegations.
Louise Straw said Hall, a BBC Radio 5 Live football reporter, was unable to comment directly because of the charges, but added: "Stuart Hall is innocent. It is a matter of concern that in the week following the publication of the Leveson Report, there appears to have been systematic leaks to the media which have given a misleading impression of what this case is about.
"Stuart Hall was not afforded the opportunity to attend voluntarily at the police station. In due course, the decision that he should be arrested will be the subject of some scrutiny. He is innocent. There will be a trial and his defence will then be in the public domain."
Hall was arrested on Wednesday by detectives investigating allegations of sexual abuse. He was subsequently charged. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
