Paul Slaughter's wife Catherine only figured out his plan when she saw the massive suitcase he was packing for the “weekend trip”.

And by that stage, Paul revealed that it was too late to cancel his trip.

Speaking to Independent.ie Paul (45) admitted that he will pay for his “white lie” but said it was “completely worth it”.

The father-of-four, who is originally from Lucan but living in Cork city, said: “I told her I was going to Galway for the weekend for a stag.

“When she saw the suitcase being packed she said: 'That's a big suitcase for a weekend, isn't it?'

“So I had to tell her then that I was coming over here to the Euros to bring the horse to France.”

Paul is planning on travelling to all of Ireland's games in Euro 2016.

He told Independent.ie that this is not the first pass he's been given this year by his wife. Six weeks ago he went on a trip to Las Vegas with his pals.

“She is a very understanding wife but I know I will pay for it. The payback will probably be her and the girls in Spain for a week.”

Paul has tickets for the Sweden and Italy games but has been unable to get one for tomorrow's clash with Belgium.

“I have done everything and anything to get a ticket, bar stripping naked and running up the main street.

“I have called everyone but you can't get one. They're like Willy Wonka's golden ticket.”

He is planning to watch the game in the Connemara Pub tomorrow and then head to Lille for the Italy clash.
