'I love you, I promise I won't die' London teenager dies 'after taking ecstasy' at rave

Daniel Spargo-Mabbs

THE father of 16-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs described him as a “really normal boy”, and said that if he could die from taking drugs “it could happen to anyone”.

Paramedics were called to treat the boy after he fell unconscious at the party on Silverdale Road, Hayes at around 4am on Saturday morning. He was rushed to hospital in west London, then moved to another in the centre of the city, where he died on Monday.

Speaking from the family home in Croydon, south London, Daniel’s father, Tim Spargo-Mabbs, 50, said: “He was up for adventure. He was a really normal kid. He spent a bunch of his spare time with his girlfriend and played a lot on his Xbox.

“This was the first time he'd taken anything and if it could happen to him it could happen to anyone. We very much want to get that message across.”

Daniel's mother Fiona told Metro he and his elder brother Jacob would always give her a hug and kiss before leaving home.

She said: “They used to say 'I love you, mum, I promise I won’t die'. That’s what he said on Friday night and he just didn’t keep that promise.

“It’s not that Dan would take lots of risks. He was a boy of good character. He said they were just going to a party in Clapham, obviously if he said 'I’m going to a rave' then I’d have said no.”

Mr Spargo-Mabbs said his son’s girlfriend, a fellow pupil at Archbishop Tenison's C of E High School in Croydon, was “traumatised” by his death. The school’s head teacher Richard Parrish described Daniel as “a bright, articulate, talented 16-year-old”.

Mr Parrish wrote in a letter to parents: “Today we begin again, knowing that our school and the world is the poorer without him.”

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the rave by paramedics, and that two men, aged 18 and 19 from Croydon, were arrested for supplying controlled drugs and are being questioned.

The rave was shut down by police.
