IT could prove a very expensive fundraiser, but one rector has handed out £450 (€561) in £10 notes to his parishioners – in the hope they can turn them into a fortune.
Reverend Richard Steel has challenged his congregation to invest the cash wisely to help boost funds for repairs at Kirkheaton Parish Church in west Yorkshire.
He took the idea from the Parable of the Talents in the Bible, in which three servants are tasked with investing their master's money.
Rev Steel said he hoped his congregation would not use the money to gamble on the horses or a lottery ticket, but hinted he would accept any winnings if the punter got lucky.
"It would be an interesting ethical debate that we would have to have if they did win," he said.
"Not everyone in the church has money to give, so I thought I'd offer them some 'seed capital' to invest," he added.
The church has already raised over £375,000 and the rector hopes bright ideas will see them past the target of £450,000. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
