Girl who threw puppies into river escapes unpunished
A schoolgirl who was filmed by a friend throwing puppies into a river has escaped punishment by police because she was too young to be charged with cruelty, it was reported.
The girl provoked outrage when a video of her lobbing the six tiny puppies into the raging water was posted on video-sharing websites and went viral across the internet.
The subsequent publicity helped police in the central Bosnian town of Bugojno to track down the girl but she was left unpunished because of her age, according to reports.
Animal welfare groups reacted furiously to the decision, which was described as "outrageous".
The 44-second video shows the blonde-haired girl, wearing a red hoodie, casually throwing the squealing and terrified black and white puppies one by one into the river.
Cruelty charges can carry a fine of up to €5,000.
A woman claimed to have rescued the dogs from the river after the video was taken, but animal welfare group PETA said they were not the same puppies.
A spokeswoman told Bild, a German newspaper: "The puppies thrown would never have survived.
"Neither the girl nor the parents will be charged. This is outrageous".
