Shimon Peres has suffered a stroke and been rushed to hospital, according to a spokeswoman for the former Israeli president.

Ayelet Frisch said that he was stable and fully conscious.

Mr Peres, 93, has held virtually every senior political office in Israel over a seven-decade career.

He stepped down as president in 2014 after completing a seven-year term.
