Family feud over €17bn fortune finally resolved

Europe's wealthiest woman and her only daughter announced yesterday that they had settled their bitter feud that had snowballed into a state scandal in France, writes Henry Samuel.
The battle between Liliane Bettencourt (88), the heiress to the L'Oreal cosmetics empire, and her estranged daughter Francoise Bettencourt Meyers (57), gripped France as the daughter sought to have her mother declared mentally unfit to run her €17bn fortune. The family squabble exploded earlier this year into a series of investigations into tax evasion and party financing that embroiled President Nicolas Sarkozy's government.
But in a coup de theatre yesterday, mother and daughter issued a statement saying they had settled their differences out of court and would "embrace the future together". Both sides agreed to drop any legal action. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
