Europe draws up tough new Iran sanctions

European Union leaders agreed yesterday to tough sanctions against Iran that directly target its oil and gas industries.
The EU sanctions, to be finalised next month, go further than United Nations measures agreed 10 days ago, by banning European investment in Iran's oil and natural gas industries.
The EU hopes to pressure Iran over its uranium enrichment programme, allegedly designed to produce nuclear weapons. "Iran has not taken the many opportunities offered to it to remove the concerns of the international community," said an EU summit text. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
