EU warns France of legal action

The European Union decided to launch legal action against France yesterday over its expulsion of Roma gypsies to poorer EU nations but said it lacked proof that Paris acted in a discriminatory way.
The decision gives France more time to defend its expulsion of more than 1,000 illegal Roma immigrants and its demolition of hundreds of Roma camps in recent weeks.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the expulsions were part of an overall crackdown on illegal immigrants and crime.
