DUTCH Queen Beatrix has announced she will abdicate in favour of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander, in a televised broadcast to the nation on this evening.
Willem-Alexander, 45, will become King of the Netherlands on April 30, she said, adding that she considered he was ready for the role.
Queen Beatrix turns 75 on Thursday.
