This dramatic image of Nice was taken just moments before the terrorist attack began last night.

The striking photo shows the Bastille Day celebrations as people innocently gathered to watch fireworks to celebrate their country’s independence day.

In what looks like pathetic fallacy a dark cloud surrounds Nice with thunder and lightning piercing through the sky.

Moments after this photo was taken a terrorist attack claimed the lives of 84 people and injured 18 as a truck ploughed into crowds at the annual celebrations.

The gunman responsible for the mass killing was a 31-year-old Franco-Tunisian born in Tunisia, a police source close to the investigation said.

French president Francois Hollande said the country's state of emergency would be extended for another three months.
