Couple charged with care home assaults
A couple appeared in court yesterday charged with a string of assaults on youngsters at a children's home.
Husband and wife Anthony and Morag Jordan face charges from the '70s and '80s when they worked at the Haut de la Garenne home on the island of Jersey, court officials said.
The couple, from Kirriemuir, Angus, did not enter any pleas during the hearing at Jersey Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Mr Jordan (61) is accused of 14 charges of assault from 1978 to 1984 and Mrs Jordan (62) is accused of 32 charges of assault from 1970 to 1984, a spokeswoman for the Royal Court of Jersey confirmed.
Jersey Police confirmed the couple were arrested last month during Operation Rectangle -- an investigation into the care system in Jersey, including the Haut de la Garenne home.
Police said Mrs Jordan began working at Haut de la Garenne in 1970 and Mr Jordan started in 1978. Both stopped working at the home in 1984.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Court of Jersey said: "They are on bail until a Royal Court date yet to be set. The next hearing will be an indictment hearing where they will enter pleas."
All but one of the charges relate to offences alleged to have taken place at Haut de la Garenne. The spokeswoman added: "The other (alleged) charge took place at a location known as Crabbe in the Parish of St Mary. A charge against Mrs Morag Jordan did not take place at Haut de la Garenne.
"They are all assaults against children of 17 years and under."
