Council puts its foot down with flip-flop ban

Monday June 11 2007

BOSSES at a British town council have been told to stop treating employees like children after they banned workers wearing flip-flops.

Oldham Council chiefs had barred staff from stepping out in the sandals on health and safety grounds.

But Howard Sykes of the Liberal Democrats, said the move has made the council look 'ridiculous'.

Howard Sykes, leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition, said the decision showed the council lacked 'common sense'. He has now written to Oldham Council's chief executive expressing his concerns.

"Can we please treat our staff like adults and have some common sense applied?" he asks.

The council report says: "Flip-flops are not considered suitable footwear for any council employee at work." Brian Armstrong of the union Unison said: "There are jobs where flip-flops are not suitable. But if you are sitting with your feet under a desk, I do not see many problems."
