Clarke nap is a 16/1 winner for punters
VETERAN Tory Kenneth Clarke, the British justice secretary, landed himself in hot water yesterday when he nodded off during the budget speech.
As his party colleague George Osborne delivered his budget, 70-year-old Mr Clarke was seen dozing on the government frontbench.
Labour leader Ed Miliband spotted the snoozing Conservative and quipped that the chancellor's growth strategy had sent him to sleep.
A spokesman for Mr Clarke dismissed the allegation, saying: "Of course he didn't fall asleep."
But bookmaker Ladbrokes said it would pay out on bets at 16/1 that Mr Clarke would drop off during the chancellor's speech.
Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Donohue said: "Clarke might have been caught napping but our punters certainly weren't."
