'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' actor dies at 83
BRITISH actor and film director Lionel Jeffries (pictured), who wrote the screenplay for and directed 'The Railway Children', has died at the age of 83, his agent said yesterday.
The London-born actor had a long career spanning theatre, film and television.
"He passed away this morning, following a long illness," said the agent's spokeswoman.
One of Mr Jeffries' best-known appearances was in the 1968 film 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', in which he played Dick Van Dyke's father.
Film director Michael Winner said: "He had an extraordinary talent for eccentric comedy. He was a fantastic actor and a great professional."
