With his brand-new shoes and jumper big enough to grow into, a shy Prince George embarked on his first day of school yesterday, clutching his father's hand while his mother was laid up with illness.

His mother Kate missed the milestone moment in her eldest son's life after being struck down by severe morning sickness in the early stages of her third pregnancy. Instead, Prince William did the honours, encouraging his apprehensive son (4) across the playground and into the reception class.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry reached out to the next generation of young people during his first official visit to Northern Ireland.

The prince was applauded as he left Belfast's MAC arts centre where he met community groups working on peace-building and issues like promoting good mental health.
