Incredible turn out for Walnut's emotional final walk
A dog owner was joined by hundreds of people and their dogs this morning on a “last walk” for his dog, who will be put down today.
Mark Woods has had his greyhound Walnut for 18 years, and recently made the decision to have Walnut euthanised due to ill health.
He decided to take one last memorable walk on Walnut’s favourite beach beforehand, and made the walk special by asking for company – but he had no idea the response he would get.
Mr Woods, from Cornwall, put a post on Facebook on Tuesday asking local dog owners to join him and Walnut for a last walk: “Sadly I am having to have Walnut euthanised on Saturday November 12 and so we will be having a last walk together on his beloved Porth Beach at 9.30am.
“I would love it if dog lovers/owners and friends would join us for a celebration of Walnut on his favourite Porth Beach. He has had an incredible life and having reached the grand age of 18 is ready for his final sleep. Hope to see you on Saturday.”
The post was shared over 2,000 times, with dog lovers in the UK and elsewhere expressing sympathy for Mr Woods and Walnut. Hundreds of well-wishers joined the two on Porth Beach today.
Mr Woods thanked those who joined him and Walnut on their walk, saying the response from other dog owners and the media was “incredible”.
A post on his Facebook page said the messages of support were “beautiful and moving and supportive”.
Those on the walk posted photos of Walnut and emotional tributes to the greyhound’s last day.
Others who couldn’t make the walk posted tributes from their homes, or on walks of their own.
