85-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife

AN 85-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his elderly wife.

The ambulance service were called to a flat at King George VI Mansions in Court Farm Road, Hove, East Sussex, just after 10.30am this morning following a report that a woman was dead there.

When police and paramedics arrived, they discovered a 71-year-old woman in the bedroom. There were no apparent external injuries and the cause of death has not yet been established.

A post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow and the next of kin of the woman, who has not been formally identified, were tonight being contacted, Sussex Police said.

A police spokesman said the man and woman were known to each other and that officers from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team were not looking for anyone else. The husband was taken from the flat to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment for minor injuries and has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police said tonight that he was in custody facing interview.
