Security forces killed seven of the militants in a stand-off that began at 4pm on Monday and ended on Tuesday afternoon.

The National Guard surrounded a house in the Raoued suburb of Tunis acting on information that it was a militant hideout. A gunfight ensued after the force attempted to take the building.

Since the overthrow of Tunisia's dictatorship in 2011, radical Islamists have grown in strength, bolstered by weapons from neighbouring Libya.
