Eight people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a police checkpoint in Baghdad, Iraqi officials said.

The attack happened in an area of the capital which was the scene of a deadly attack a day earlier.

A police officer said a bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into the checkpoint in the Shiite-dominated north-eastern al-Rashidiya district on Wednesday. He said 20 other people were injured.

A medical official confirmed the casualties.

On Tuesday, at least 12 people were killed in a suicide truck bombing at an outdoor fruit and vegetable market in al-Rashidiya.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State group. IS was behind two large-scale attacks last week that killed around 300 people.
