It’s 5.30pm on the busy streets of Madrid and a young woman, professing to be drunk, is asking strangers for help finding her friends.
What she doesn’t want is a stream of sexual advances, offers of more drink and ‘hugs’ from the men that approach her.
This is the latest ‘social experiment’ uploaded to YouTube. Since it appeared yesterday, the shocking video has already had 30,000 views and it’s climbing rapidly.
The 10 minute clip was made by rehab clinic Centro Europea Neurosalus. It depicts an actress pretending to be drunk and swigging from a bottle of alcohol, inside a plastic bag.
When strangers approach her, she claims to have become separated from her friends and explains that her phone battery is dead. As a consequence, she is groped, harassed and even kissed -all in broad daylight and surrounded by people travelling home from work through the buzzing city centre.
Speaking at the start of the video, the director Jose Miguel Gaona, explains that the actress will remain ‘passive’. He says: “This particular situation poses many questions - what could happen, for example, on a Friday or Saturday night?
“'Will men help her? Let's see what happens.”
The actress is first approached by a group of four men, who claim they have nothing else to do and advise the woman she “hasn’t drunk enough” and that she should have “a little more”.
Things become rapidly more sinister from there. We next see the actress being approached by a man who asks whether she has got drunk before and says “Have you just landed on planet earth?”
He then attempts to take her hand and lead her away to a stairwell where she can “sit down”, before she manages to remove her hand from his.
In a busy square, two men approach the actress. Despite telling them she has drunk too much and cannot walk they insist on going to buy more beer.
One calls her “beautiful” and gives her a prolonged hug, his hand lingering by her waist.
The other repeatedly attempts to persuade the woman to come back to his hotel room, which is “two minutes away”, as he has an iPhone charger. He also tells her to call her friend, so they can go “partying”.
But it’s the final scene that’s perhaps the most shocking. The actress is depicted leaning against a wall outside a restaurant, wigging from her beer. Within seconds, a man approaches her and leads her down a secluded street, telling her she is “too beautiful”. He proceeds to pin her against the wall and tries to kiss her multiple times.
The subtitles explain that his ‘aggression’ prompted the director to step-in and break them up.
He leads the actress away, as the man shouts “Why do you take her? You don’t take her!” and attempts to keep hold of her.
At the end of the video, Gaona, explains: “Most of you are probably surprised and some of you also disgusted and maybe you are thinking that we have avoided some scenes favouring the most "juicy" parts, but I am afraid to deceive you.
'It really was the opposite. Those situations full of rudeness and physical abuse were taken away because there is no need to show it in such depth.
'The most disappointing fact is that we had no need to edit the video. Why? Because nobody got close to helping this drunken woman.”
Many viewers have expressed outrage at the footage, calling the men ‘disgusting’ and ‘predatory’.
Although some have accused the actress of ‘behaving like a slut’ and ‘leading the men on’ – despite the director’s explanation that she remained passive throughout.
“She is hinting at sex. If a person is upset and drunk, she would not be behaving like a slut. If she had not behaved like a slut, she would have been helped” said one YouTube commenter.
“Who wouldn’t want to f*** a drunk beautiful p****?” wrote another.
