'Date' gets out of hand

A MAN in Georgia, USA, who handcuffed himself to a female co-worker in an effort to get a date has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Jason Earl Dean, (25) handcuffed himself to the 18-year-old in August 2011. They worked together at a Taco Bell fast food restaurant. Dean was charged with false imprisonment.

Veteran bags relic

A US World War Two veteran who served in France has been reunited with his army-issue duffel bag nearly seven decades after it went missing.

Ninety-two-year-old William Kadar opened a parcel to find the drab green bag inside. Mr Kadar said he last saw the bag in November 1944, a month before he was captured by the Germans. A letter said a 16-year-old French boy found the bag in his grandfather's house.

Alligator goes to pot

POLICE in California who entered a man's house for a probation check found a stash of marijuana guarded by a 1.5-metre long alligator.

Officers found 15kgs of marijuana and the alligator in a tank in the bedroom. Assif Mayr was arrested and held in jail on suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale. The alligator was taken to Oakland Zoo.

Barely able to move

GERMAN firemen rescued a naked man trapped in a narrow chimney in central Berlin.

The fire brigade was alerted to the emergency after police failed to help the 39-year old man who was wedged 10 metres down the shoulder-width chimney.

Praying goes digital

THE largest group of Franciscan friars in the US is offering the faithful a new way to pray in the digital age by accepting prayer requests via text messages.

The Friars of Holy Name Province, New York, who staff 40 parishes and have colleges, soup kitchens and food centres along the eastern seaboard, as well as groups in Peru and Tokyo, are among a few religious groups offering this type of digital service.

Gay spouse army row

THE Marine Corps has advised its legal staff that spouse clubs operating on its premises must admit same-sex spouses if they wish to remain on the bases, after a club refused admission to a same-sex spouse at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Other service branches have not yet announced how to accommodate same-sex couples following the repeal of the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy that barred gays and lesbians from serving openly.
