Thirteen children have been hurt after a swing ride at a festival in Connecticut lost power and sent them falling to the ground.

Police say most of the children suffered minor injuries and were treated at the Oyster Festival in Norwalk, but several were more seriously hurt and rushed to local hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The ride, which sends swings into the air, was said to have lost power, with the children in the swings falling to the ground. It was not clear how far off the ground they were when they fell.

Police say the festival remains open, but all rides are closed.

Norwalk police have called in the state fire marshal's office to investigate.
