Five children have died after accidentally falling down a well in north-west Pakistan.

Bilal Ahmed, a rescue official, said the children were part of a group of students sitting on a concrete slab on top of a well in the town of Pasht Khara.

They were studying the Koran, Islam's holy book, when the slab collapsed into the well below. Fifteen youngsters fell in. Ten were injured, and five killed.

Rescuers rushed to the scene, and Pakistani television showed images of people crowded around the well with ladders reaching down inside.

The village is roughly six miles from the city of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
