Chavez having 'complex treatments'

Venezuela's Vice President Nicolas Maduro waves to supporters during a demonstration (AP)

Venezuelan vice president Nicolas Maduro says President Hugo Chavez is undergoing "tough and complex treatments" following cancer-related surgery.

The country's president has not been seen or spoken publicly since December 10 when he travelled to the Cuban capital Havana for the operation.

Venezuelans on both sides of the country's political divide have been speculating about the socialist leader's condition amid regular but vague reports regarding his health.

The government has not provided details about the type of cancer Mr Chavez suffers from except to say that it is in the pelvic region.

Mr Maduro gave the most recent health update on Wednesday.

Mr Chavez has undergone four cancer-related operations and has overcome several complications, including a severe respiratory infection.
