Gunfire and explosions rang out in the streets of Bujumbura as military forces backing the attempted coup battled troops loyal to Mr Nkurunziza for control of strategic sites in the city.

The presidency said on Twitter that Mr Nkurunziza salutes the patriotism of the police as well as the patience of the Burundian people.

It was not possible to independently verify Nkurunziza's presence in Burundi.

The unrest came after the ruling party nominated him for a controversial third term.
