Building collapse death toll rises

Rescuers using mechanical diggers remove rubble from the site of a collapsed building in downtown Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (AP)

The number of people killed when a building collapsed in Tanzania's largest city has risen to 30, the government said

Rescue workers have given up hope of finding more survivors after the 16-storey building in Dar es Salaam collapsed on Friday morning.

Only 17 people have been pulled out of the rubble alive.

The building, which was about to be completed, did not have tenants. Most of those killed were labourers and people passing by.

The dead included children who were playing football at a nearby playground.

Witnesses said many construction workers are still missing.
