Investigators in Louisiana have been examining forensics after a shooting by law enforcement officers left a six-year-old boy dead and his father critically wounded.
Colonel Mike Edmonson, the head of the state police force, said authorities were heading to the central Louisiana city of Marksville to speak to the city marshals involved in the incident.
The marshals were pursuing a vehicle driven by Chris Few around 9.30pm local time on Tuesday and fired at the vehicle as he tried to flee, Avoyelles parish coroner Dr LJ Mayeux said.
Mr Few's young son Jeremy Mardis died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest, he added.
Mr Few reportedly was backing into the marshals when they fired.
The boy, Dr Mayeux said, was "caught in the line of fire" and killed.
