Former world champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in California.

Police said the 43-year-old's car was pulled over for speeding in Pasadena shortly before 2am on Wednesday.

After an officer smelled alcohol inside the SUV, t he former fighter failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody.

De La Hoya was cited for driving under the influence and released to his manager.

Nicknamed "the Golden Boy", the former boxer had stints in rehabilitation facilities in 2011 and 2013.

De La Hoya, who won 10 world titles at six different weights as well as an Olympic gold medal, has been hailed as one of the greatest fighters of the modern era. His 16-year professional career ended with a loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2008.

The Mexican-American is founder and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which handles one of the biggest stars in boxing, Canelo Alvarez.
